Internal Communications

Working on internal communications at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) entailed developing and implementing content strategies that aligned with my executive clients' vision and goals regarding staff communication, in addition to engaging staff to participate in institute-wide activities.

Deliverables included intranet content (articles, infographics, tutorials, staff news), internal event promotional materials, videos, podcasts, and print materials like posters.

Intranet Article: Air Pollution

One of my main responsibilities was to research, pitch, and write articles for the NHLBI intranet, with new articles publishing about once a week. Articles had to be topical and note NHLBI contributions.

In this article, I discussed the effects of indoor air pollution on respiratory health, highlighted NHLBI-funded studies that explored the links between indoor pollution and lung health, provided staff with strategies for keeping their indoor air clean, and included links to additional resources.

Poster: Combined Federal Campaign

NHLBI wanted to encourage federal employees to contribute to the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), an annual giving campaign that allows employees to donate money or volunteer time to any number of vetted charities. I opted for using short, compelling statistics to capture staff members' attention, remind them about the CFC and its deadlines, and encourage them to find out more on the institute's intranet.

These posters were hung in the last two months before the CFC deadline and were accompanied by three reminder emails to staff. Combined, these communications contributed to a significant drive in donations in the final months of the campaign. The CFC intranet pages also had the most traffic of any intranet page during the same timeframe.

Infographic: Continuity of Operations Plan

NHLBI ran into the issue of needing to host their emergency preparedness training for staff around the same time their parent agency's (NIH's) emergency preparedness training was due to be completed. To make it clear what the differences were in the trainings and why they were both important, I drafted this infographic for staff.

Storyboard: New Employee Orientation Video

NHLBI wanted a way to convey to new employees that the institute was a great place to work. This video highlighted some milestones throughout NHLBI's history and featured testimonials from staff to showcase the value of working at this scientific research institution.
